Murdoch's News Corp defends climate coverage in escalating Turnbull stoush
News Corp is attempting to defuse the former prime minister's criticism after he locked horns with a senior editor on Q&A over coverage of the national bushfire crisis and climate change
What seemed to be overlooked by Paul Kelly, the solitary defender of News Corp on Q&A, was while his argument may have had some validity some 50 years ago it no longer does. The systemic change in the media landscape in Australia over the past half a century has seen diversity lost. The diversity he's talking about simply isn't there any longer. The macro division is simply between private & public broadcasting overlaid by the growth of big tech and the algorithms of digital technologies.
Murdoch being the largest fish in the English speaking news ocean. His business model's focus has changed from supplying a diversity of news and opinion to harvesting subscriptions like a whale does krill to exist. Ratings to sell to the largest concentration of money in the market whose existence depends on influencing the politics of the rest of us.
Kelly and Morrison simply overlooked the global and multinational nature of Murdoch's operation arguing it's merely another media operation in our market place. If that were the case News,Corp would have gone bust years ago and Kelly would be out of a job. The fossil fuel industry is a planetary global mega-bemoth industry and Climate Change a consequence threatens it's very existence. Murdoch with Genie Oil is a heavy investor and his business model services their mutual interests. Kelly's attempt to cast News Corp as simply another private news source fails.
News Corp is a mega political influencer a super spreader of global influence which is used to confuse, obfuscate and divide opinion with regard the global problem the fossil energy industries have helped create and that science has discovered and defined. The problem the fossil fuel industries suspected existed for almost a century but were too reluctant to address.
