Opinion The ABC has been reduce to a copy of private media rather than an organization distinguished by it's public difference. The LNP couldn't promise to eradicate it as that would have been too politically dangerous. But to reduce it to a level nearer to News Corp, Ch9, and Stokes and have them compete in their privatised territory has for the time being, no doubt, satisfied the quid pro quo arrangement set up with Murdoch by Abbott 15 years ago. A pillar of Australian Democracy has been weakened because of this loss. Will compulsory voting follow?
Regrettably, the recent history of ending established shows in a bid to woo new, younger viewers has left gaping holes at the national broadcaster.
The ABC appears to have chosen light entertainment and “factual” programming as its wheelhouse, competing with the commercials in their comfort zone with series such as Muster Dogs, Old Folks Home for 4 Year Olds, Old People’s Home For Teenagers, Love on the Spectrum, Back in Time For . . . Some of them are fine, or better than fine (Hard Quiz, Take 5 With Zan Rowe), but some aren’t (Frankly, WTFAQ). And when lacking inspiration, Aunty goes back to the future, reviving past successes such as Spicks and Specks (with the original cast, not the new-gen replacements) and Kitchen Cabinet.
