How Israeli settlers are expanding illegal outposts amid Gaza war

Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank have been emboldened during Israel’s war in Gaza, multiplying their attacks on Palestinian residents and building dozens of illegal roads and outposts that further limit Palestinians’ movements.

Data gathered by activists and satellite images verified by Al Jazeera show that between October 2023 and January 2024, settlers in the occupied West Bank built at least 15 outposts and 18 roads – illegal under both Israeli and international law. In addition, settlers built hundreds of metres of fences and multiple roadblocks, further limiting Palestinians’ movement.

“When there is a war, that is when settlers take advantage and try to establish as many outposts as they can,” said Mauricio Lapchik, an activist with Peace Now, an Israeli organisation documenting settlement activities.

Israeli military conducts raids across the occupied West Bank

Local media and the Wafa news agency are reporting Israeli military raids in multiple locations across the occupied West Bank tonight. They include:

  • The Aqabat Jabr camp, south of Jericho
  • The city of Tulkarem
  • The Al-Taawun neighbourhood in the city of Nablus
  • The towns of Bil’in, Silwad and Al-Mazraa Al-Sharqiya, near Ramallah
  • The town of Nuba, northwest of Hebron

A Palestinian man has also been arrested after Israeli forces stormed his home in the Jalazoun camp, north of Ramallah, while confrontations have broken out between Palestinian resistance groups and Israeli forces in the town of Al-Ram, north of Jerusalem.

It’s been almost two months since the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to stop killing Gazans and destroying their means of subsistence. So let’s look back and ask (1) how Israel has responded to its “orders,” and (2) how hard the Biden administration has pushed Israel to abide by those orders. Spoiler alert: the short answers are (1) not well and (2) not very.

The American government has provided most of the armaments and targeting technologies being used to kill Gazans by the thousands while turning many of the rest of them into refugees by destroying their homes, offices, schools, and hospitals. Nor did the Biden administration threaten to withdraw that support when Israel blocked shipments of crucial food and fuel to the 25-mile-long Gaza Strip. It also keeps vetoing U.N. Security Council resolutions that would hold Israel accountable. And President Biden, despite an increasing amount of rhetorical shuffling, continues to back Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), even though they have ignored the International Court’s orders and continue committing atrocities.
