Shock move as senator defects to join Turnbull government
One Liberal insider said the move was a momentum changer and another described the addition of a senator as a "significant public signal" at a time when some party members had shifted support to the Australian Conservatives or Nick Xenophon's new grouping SA Best.
It would seem that every step takes and every move he makes Tony Abbott is being forsaken. Who will be Andrew Bolt's guardian and parliamentary confidant now? Abbott simply couldn't afford to buy the Party and Murdoch only saw it as worthwhile in terms of the profit he could make. Turnbull ensured that immediate possibility was lost. He can't be seen to support the ALP in the next election can he?
Now everyone admits it: political donations buy access and influence
And the politicians insist the money comes with no strings attached: it does not buy access or influence or favours or votes. But it does save taxpayers the cost of financing those election campaigns themselves.
Now the facade is slipping.
Like the government's new independent parliamentary expenses authority – or a potential federal anti-corruption body – publicly funded campaigns would be another burden on long-suffering taxpayers.
But if we care about the integrity of our democracy we need to invest in it.
Simply put did Turnbull buy his primeministership? and who is he beholden to?
