Every ALP, Greenie, or Teal is hoping Dutton is made the leader of the LNP to ensure them a lasting stay as a government
Following defeat at the 2022 Federal Election, Peter Dutton
looks set to take over as the next leader of the Liberal Party and steer
it further to the Right, writes George Grundy.
Dutton himself doesn’t need to change course. He’s already the man who walked out on Kevin Rudd’s “Sorry” speech and told us Victorians were scared to leave the house, for fear of African gangs.
It was Dutton who was the architect of the offshore processing of
asylum seekers, at facilities where physical and sexual abuse, including
of children, was rife.
All Dutton needs to do now is ape his American counterparts, and that means:
Why election campaign delivered sub-par journalism
Probe into election day boat stunt |
|
The
Albanese government has launched an investigation into an election day
scare campaign about the interception of an asylum seeker boat, as it
attracts criticism for turning the boat back. What we know: - Deputy prime minister Richard Marles
said Border Force’s issuing of an election day press release about the
interception of an asylum seeker boat from Sri Lanka was a “disgrace” (The Guardian);
- It was against Border Force’s own policy to issue a media release while the operation was under way (SMH);
- Labor and Liberal sources believed the call for a media release came from former prime minister Scott Morrison’s office;
- The Liberal Party
immediately began texting voters in marginal seats on election day:
“BREAKING – Aust Border Force has intercepted an illegal boat trying to
reach Aus. Keep our borders secure by voting Liberal today.”
- The Saturday Paper’s chief political correspondent Karen Middleton
said she received an unverified tip-off a month ago that the Sri Lankan
government had organised to send boats timed to arrive around poll day
as an “election stunt” (SBS);
- Labor has turned the boat around, continuing the Coalition’s controversial policy of turnbacks of asylum seekers (ABC);
- Greens Immigration spokesperson Senator Nick McKim said it was a “shameful continuation of Scott Morrison's brutal policy”;
- Turning back boats that are unseaworthy or return asylum seekers to places where they face harm is in breach of international law (Kaldor Centre).
