5 years after the Royal Commission Colonial approach to children form the cradle to 18 continues after which a training for adulthood has been well and truly achieved.

Urgent reform is overdue to help Australia’s children in need of guidance instead of incarceration, writes Gerry Georgatos.

SEND CASK ARSENIC EXTERMINATE ABORIGINES - TELEGRAM 1907
This extraordinary Telegram from Broome (Kimberley, Western Australia) resident Chas Morgan on 20 July 1907 requesting that he be sent a ‘cask arsenic exterminate aborigines’ is remarkable for many reasons beyond what is stated.
It is directly addressed to the man who was responsible for the protection of Aboriginal people: Chief Protector of Aborigines Henry ‘Harry’ Prinsep.
It is two years after Dr Walter Roth’s notorious Royal Commission into Aboriginal Affairs that shed light (and generated national and international headlines) on the appalling conditions for Aboriginal people in the Kimberley following which much reform was promised. And it is post Australian Federation on a ‘Commonwealth’ telegram - but this exposure didn’t seem to bother Chas Morgan.

Michael Pascoe: The federal Liberal Party doesn’t care about Australia

So the rabble that is the federal Opposition will remain aloof from the jobs and skills summit, declining the opportunity to contribute to policy formation – if they have anything to contribute – preferring to remain remote to whinge, playing to their rusted-on base instead of the nation’s benefit.

And thus the Dutton opposition perforce marks itself as unfit for consideration as alternative government. It doesn’t care about the country, about our future.

It lacks any sense of integrity. It’s only in it for the mates, for the vested interests, for the lust for power, for the keys to The Lodge.

And that is a bad thing for us all. We get better government when there is good opposition, challenging, improving.

The Dutton opposition has left the building. It has nothing to offer.

The Shovel’s view on the Donald Trump FBI raid

We're no fans of Donald Trump. But the FBI's raid on the home of a former president sets a dangerous precedent

A precedent which now means that anyone who evades taxes, attempts to undermine an election, sexually assaults women, manipulates the value of their assets, uses state resources to enrich themselves or aids and abets the overthrow of a democratically elected government will be subject to investigation.
