We won’t begrudge independent news outlet Crikey enjoying its moment in the sun, after billionaire News Corporation co-chair Lachlan Murdoch withdrew his defamation suit on Friday.
“We Won” was the blunt email to subscribers, after a high-risk strategy to poke the litigious bear ended in an embarrassing retreat for Murdoch Jr, just days after Fox Corporation had settled a separate defamation case brought by vote machine manufacturers Dominion for $US757 million.

Chief executive of Crikey’s parent company Private Media Will Hayward seemed pretty chuffed, changing his Twitter bio to “unindicted co-conspirator”, a reference to the offending line written by political editor Bernard Keane which kicked off the whole saga.
As for Murdoch Jr, we reckon he’ll be just fine. After all, his flashy $150 million super yacht, featuring an onboard beach club, is almost ready to hit the high seas, five years after it was first ordered.

The Murdochs long ago discovered that vast profits could be made from a media outlet that functioned as a political party, selling grievance, victimhood and conspiracy theories of demonic “liberal elites” to older white Americans.
