If journalism’s goal is to just appear impartial, it strikes me, its goal then is not delivering news. I was under the impression journalists were there to evaluate and sort fact from fiction in search of truth, and inform their audience. Muller seems to suggest that the current debate within the profession has weakened it. Peer group debate about facts I would have thought strengthened not weakened the profession. Isn’t that the methodology given to secular rational thinking.
The open letters have actually shone a light on the disjunct between
journalistic ideals and the desired product that their Institutional corporate
employers want to deliver. It's a product that in general is a distortion of a
journalist’s ideal of news. At a time when journalism needs to be at
its strongest that open letter is just a much-needed clarion call for
truth blocked by organizations wanting something quite different they call
impartiality or Trump’s idea of equivalency but that's definitely not news.
