Rather than affirming American exceptionalism, the pandemic has fed into a narrative of American decline.

But the belief in American exceptionalism has taken a battering in recent years. The Iraq War, the global financial crisis, regular mass shootings, entrenched poverty and the rise of China have shaken the country's sense of superiority.
