Fossil Fuel Fiesta: Australia’s coal and gas giants get more in subsidies than they pay in royalties
Australia’s fossil fuel miners and drillers may be receiving more in government subsidies than they pay in royalties. An investigation by Callum Foote lifts the lid on the transfer of wealth from the public to foreign-controlled resources companies.
Talk of war with China reveals Australia's delusions of grandeur
THE LAST MAJOR CONFLICT in the Pacific ended over 75 years ago. Japan, the United States, China and the European colonial powers fought a war that cost millions of lives. It contributed to the downfall of several empires and overturned the regional political order.
Further, the American use of atomic bombs against Japan led to subsequent generations living with the fear of nuclear war.
Public figures in Australia who are now loudly predicting that a war with China is looming, ought to think carefully about something like this scenario playing out again. No matter what the behaviour of the Chinese regime is, or what the status of bilateral relations are, war is not an option.

It’s crazy that Melbourne is once again teetering on the edge of yet another devastating city lock down, after 15 people got infected.
Shutting down Melbourne for the fourth time would represent another massive failure of public policy, this time caused by politicians too complacent about keeping Australians in their golden cage.
Look around the world.
Countries smashed by the virus – Britain and the US – are opening up after a huge campaign of vaccinations.
But Australia, which was barely touched, looks close to shutting down its second biggest city.
