As the civilian death toll in Gaza exceeds 25,500 Palestinians, at least 10,400 of whom were children, the Australian Government reaffirms its position in a statement almost entirely focused on Hamas that it took two weeks to curate. Farah Abdurahman reports.

Israeli troops have killed at least 350 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank since 7 October, and at least eight were killed by settlers, the UN monitoring group OCHA has reported.
Of those killed, 94 were children.
Israeli forces and settlers have injured more than 4,340 Palestinians in the West Bank since 7 October, over 650 of them children.
Israel’s intensified attacks have not managed to stymie armed resistance in the West Bank.

This sequence of events is far from exceptional. Since October 7, Israel’s police have been implementing a consistent policy of preventing or limiting any protest against the war — in contrast to protests in solidarity with the hostages and their families, which have been permitted in certain areas. This policy is still in effect despite Israel’s Supreme Court issuing an interim injunction earlier this month prohibiting National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir from interfering with the policing of demonstrations; in large part, police appear nonetheless to be enforcing the minister’s desired crackdown on freedom of expression during the war.

This Australia Day, as we pull out the flags and thongs we bought last year, and head out to enjoy the fireworks and homegrown Aussie music, we could probably think about our origins, what brought us here, us or our parents or grandparents, or for some, remembering those who came as convicts, banished from Britain because their forebear stole a rabbit from the King’s forest so he could feed his starving family.
Or for some, who look at the immigrants and see what they have lost, and yet are Australians too, remember that despite the best efforts of the immigrants that culture which dates back over 60,000 years survives still, and makes up another chapter in what it means to be Australian.

PM’s leadership is ‘dead, buried, cremated’: Dutton
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s leadership is “dead, buried, cremated”, says Opposition Leader Peter Dutton, who has slammed the new stage 3 tax package.
Dutton said the introduction of a carbon tax by former prime minister Julia Gillard was the only other example he could think of when a leader was prepared to lie.

“We’ve got a prime minister who’s prepared to lie to the Australian public – I don’t think people will easily forget or forgive,” Dutton told Ray Hadley on Sydney radio program 2GB.
“I’ve only seen this once before, and that is with Julia Gillard, where somebody was prepared to just blatantly, knowingly, willingly lie to the Australian public and that’s what the prime minister has done.”
The decision to change stage 3 tax cuts has meant Albanese’s “leadership was dead” says Dutton, who expects future leadership challenges.
“I said a week ago, Ray, on your program I think, that if the prime minister abandoned stage 3 tax cuts, then his leadership was dead, buried, cremated. Let me tell you, I believe that to be the truth,” he said.
Guess he's
reminded it was the downfall of Tony Abbott without mentioning it. If
the public or any genuine party can't and won't abide by liars then
there's little or no time left for Peter Dutton. Simply think
back to his time as Health, Immigration or Home affairs Minister. Wasn't
he the reason why Morrison appointed himself to Home Affairs because Dutton was making a dog's breakfast of it.
“Jim Chalmers and Bill Shorten and others will be rubbing their hands together with glee at the moment, thinking that the prime minister has completely and utterly destroyed his credibility with the Australian public.
“The Australian public won’t support a liar as prime minister.”
