Andrew Bolt the Media's Grand Inquisitor
The Australian Inquisition is a particularly intolerant movement, and even today very few members of the Australian media teach us very much about it's horrors.Andrew Bolt not only calls for them to be reinstalled but practices them today.
The Inquisition of the past was a series of efforts by the Roman Catholic Church to control secular (non-ecclesiastical) society, ostensibly in the interest of destroying heresy and alleged witchcraft, terms which covered a vast range of imagined "offences" against the Faith. In fact, the Inquisition was essentially a reactionary political tool which, at various times, suppressed independence movements, Jews and then Protestants, freedom of expression, the Enlightenment and fundamental principles of democracy and equal rights among social classes. The Inquisition's ideas influenced life in the world's most multicultural center then Sicily well into the twentieth century. At its worst, it was a murderous and an anti-intellectual movement whose victims were ideas as well as people.
The parallels are quite clear to today in the demands of Andrew Bolt and the right wing Christian Conservatives today here. Basically Hanson and groups like the Q society along with the extreme right of the Liberal Party all find it politically efficacious for Christians to retake control of secular society. The foundation can be seen in the likes of the conservative Catholics like Abbott, Andrews, Dutton , Bernardi etc who demanded Assimilation as their goal. A singular language, dress code, and set of morals were required a monoculture with penalties for those deemed or suspected of being transgressors.
Sicily was once the most cosmopolitan place in then known world. Greek-speaking Eastern Orthodox communities had lived here since ancient times, Moors from North Africa worshiped in mosques, Christian Normans and Jews had their own schools, churches and synagogues. Some rural pagans quietly kept on honoring the gods of nature. Sicily had had its share of religious tensions, but somehow everyone held onto their own religion, language and culture and bumped alongside each other reasonably peacefully. In fact the cathedral in Palermo is a synthesis of art and architecture celebrating all the faiths on the island. Quotes from the Koran adorn it's entrance and the internal ceiling a tribute to Islamic art.
Sicily was Australia today except for a standout difference 400,000 refugees have passed through Sicily in 2016 without a single case of intolerance being reported by either the refugees or the Sicilians neither in fear of the police. The Islands cosmopolitan roots provided the empathy and understanding that the intolerance Andrew Bolt preaches doesn't. Sicily today continues much to Andrew Bolt's disgust to welcome and save refugees.
The degree to which centuries of Inquisition impeded social progress cannot be underestimated. Its effect were lasting ones. The reflections seen in Bolt's anti- science, anti-intellectual and anti- cultural stance promotes stagnation. The idea of us contemplating a safe school program and anathema and anyone advocating it needs to be identified and removed for their heresy
Credlin: Liberals have too much of Labor's green madness
Peta Credlin is right. The Liberals cannot
get away with just being the lesser evil on renewable energy. Yes,
Labor's 50 per cent renewable energy target is plainly mad - ruinous -
but even the Liberals' target of 23 per cent by 2020 will force us to
find $10 billion for more wind farms in just four years. Why?
One needs to PAY to read the writings of those preaching that science is little more than a heretical religion and that climate change is simply a faith designed to wrest money from the traditional means that have served us well for over a century. New technology is a conspiracy of false economics and old is gold. Then there is the Green madness that suggests that old isn't in fact gold. That science has progressed in every-way and helped improve the world in the last century faster that the rest of history. That history is littered with attempts to resist progress particularly that which not only made sense economically but also satisfied the long term values of the future. Credlin and Bolt have a short term future preaching dirty energy and an over heated planet is the way to go and no progress is needed in global energy production. Australia has the possibility of being the engine of the planet given it's climate resources. One simply needs to ask how much have these two invested in Fossil Fuels? Like Donald Trump they wont reveal if they have put their money where their mouths are.
Marie Le Pen's explosive campaign ad
Pundits say Marie Le Pen, head of France's
National Front, will lose in the final run-off in this year's
presidential election because all the parties will unite against her.
But her new campaign ad is so powerful that I would not rule anything
out.
Free speech works: Kirralie Smith attacks Larry Pickering
Yesterday I said defenders of free speech
had a special responsibility to attack Larry Pickering for hijacking a
free-speech event by saying Muslims "are not all bad, they do chuck
pillow-biters off buildings". We must show that manners are best policed
by the public, not judges. Now Kirralie Smith does the right thing.
Fake news exposed: 72 terrorists from countries banned by Trump
The judges frustrating Donald Trump - and
the voters' will - are wrong. In fact, since 9/11, 72 individuals from
the seven mostly Muslim countries covered by President Trump's "extreme
vetting" executive order have been convicted of terrorism. Why didn't
Trump's lawyer correct them?
