Democracy depends on Civic Mobilisation
In response to John Pesutto (‘The Age’, 14/4). What critics don’t seem to realise is that the strength of a democracy can hinge on the mobilisation and activity of its civil society. If we do not accept protest and civil disobedience, we are weakening the fabric of our democracy. Indeed, an active civil society is a safeguard for democracy’s long-term preservation. Perhaps free speech should not be ‘absolute’, but every time we weaken its universality, we set a precedent which ‘could come back to bite’ progressive forces later down the track. Further, Left advocates usually do not have the same opportunity to express their views. And by ‘Left’ I include left social democrats and democratic socialists. And even the more radical have a right for their ideas to be tested. When on the odd occasion a left-wing commentator appears on the ABC there are calls of ‘bias’. But Left views are almost absent in Newscorp newspapers, and ‘The Age’ has moved to the relative Centre. What we need is a truly strong pluralism in our democracy. A ‘battlefield of ideas’ where journalists do not try and manipulate; but rather a genuine, inclusive and honest contest of analysis and values.
WHAT EASTER TOLD US ABOUT MORRISON
VIDEO Check the difference in how Bill Shorten and Scott Morrison celebrated Easter - and their faith. Shorten seems to know Christianity doesn't win votes in the media or on the Left, so tempers his personal beliefs. But Morrison - part of a church so enthusiastic it's mocked as happy clappy - he doesn't hide from it. My editorial on The Bolt Report.

ARE THESE WEEPING ALARMISTS SANE?
The global warming scare has become totally insane when it's persuaded these weeping activists in London that they could literally be the "last generation" - which presumes total extinction of humanity in 20 years.
Can anyone doubt that the warming movement has left science far, far behind? Andrew Bolt
One moment Climate Science is just "Another Religion" the next "Warmists have left Science behind" put the two together the only conclusion you can come to is Andrew Bolt hasn't a clue what he's talking about from one moment to the next. At least the protester's message is clear, and we do associate it with the urgency that things need be done. Bolt's message hardly makes sense in that he has no faith in Science that's clear in much the same way he has no confidence in the premise of any religion when Bolt claims he's Agnostic but that the principles of Christianity stand head and shoulders over any others even Science. Basically, he believes in the Protestant Ethic that those that have reaped the rewards and privileges in this life have done so by merit and what they have received they deserve not from God it seems but the natural order of things merit.
Well, we clearly know that's wrong unless you believe in an "elect" as Bolt does and his belief he's a member. The amusing thing that those he works for don't share his faith and he's just their servant but shhh! Don't tell him his bubble might pop and his insecurity will show. It's why he wants to retire in the Netherlands where they don't know the sad truth.
GRETA THUNBERG AND THE 'HOLY FOOL'
Greta Thunberg is another holy fool. She is a 16-year-old diagnosed with Asperger's, selective mutism and an obsessive-compulsive disorder. But she preaches an extreme and uncompromising global warming alarmism, and has been asked to lecture the Pope, the UN secretary general, the World Economic Forum, the European Union and protesters in London.
PAYWALL
Andrew Bolt believes in his own "exceptionalism" but refuses to believe in others. He comes across as a spiteful idiot who thinks he's a savant. He calls out a 16-year-old whose disadvantages are meant to stereotype her who intelligently accepts Science. She, it appears is attacked ferociously by Bolt's master News Corp, and Bolt not only wants people to pay to read with a Paywall but follows suit with his banner of abuse calling her a "Holy Fool". That's what you'd regard as exceptional, isn't it?Remember how Bolt attacked Adam Goodes for calling out a 16-year-old when she called him an 'ape' well what does he think he's doing here more than just name calling out a child? He's abusing her and suggesting her ailments are the cause of her opinions. There is no lesson to be gained here other than telling us who Bolt is.
Is that the way to sell subscriptions to the Herald Sun?You'd think management would have second thoughts. If he wants to sell subs to Murdoch's dirt rag, he might start by throwing free copies over the fences of non-subscribers like is being done in Warringah and see the reaction he gets.
